MAY 2022: Wild Women on the Water meeting 5/3/2022

Patrice Messina called the meeting to order at 7:00. There were 27 attendees.

Lynea Wilson, a Curator at the History of Diving Museum, gave a presentation about sponges. Sponge Hunters will be on exhibit at the museum from 5/18/2022 until the end of September. Sponges are skeletons of living animals, and as super water filterers their health is an important indicator of water quality. They are the oldest living species on the planet, and were referenced by ancient cultures. Only 5 species of sponges are commercially prized, and are found in the Mediterranean, Bahamas, South Florida and Key West, and Tarpon Springs, FL. Harvest is accomplished by free diving, hooking from boats or by hard hat diving.

Key West became an important sponging site in the 1820’s, but had been overharvested by the 1860’s. The Key West fleet discovered sponges at Tarpon Springs, causing extensive conflict. By the 1900’s, Greek merchants began free diving for sponges, providing an incentive for many Greek immigrants. Blights in the 1930’s led to the invention of synthetic sponges.

Sponges regenerate, and WWOW members can volunteer with iCare to outplant them.

Members then introduced themselves.

Linda Lankenau provided an update on speakers.  In June, a Park Ranger will speak about local parks.

Kathy Sill was not present until after the Treasurer’s report had been presented. There is $4,423 in the account when the month was closed.

Diane Xiomek presented the membership report. As of 5/3/2022 there are 33 paid members plus 4 honorary members. Birthdays were announced:

  • 5/4 Bobbie Freeland
  • 5/8 Mary Grace Hood

Diane thanked Kathy Sill for her hard work volunteering to handle the food money. Kathy will not be accepting ANY member payments going forward; ONLY Diane can accept payment (check preferred), and it MUST be accompanied by a signed form EVERY YEAR.

Sunshine report by Judy O’Hara Vetrick: Everyone is well and healthy!

Rebekah Susa requested sign-ups for the May Full Moon Party at Island Grill. You can go to www.keysislandgrill.com for tickets.

The May activity will be the Annual Luncheon and White Elephant exchange, to be hosted by Sugie Stedham at her home (144 Dove Ave., Tavernier, MM 94 Oceanside) on May 21st at noon. Details and signup are online at mealtrain.com/potlucks/4m5n86. Gifts must be wrapped and in good useable condition.

Pat Rosendale reported that there will be a trip to Flamingo in June, with the date TBD. All Captains must have an Everglades Permit, and all participants must pay Park admission. Four boats are available.

Patrice Messina suggested a raft-up of boats, possibly at the Hog Heaven sandbar, on Memorial Day Weekend. A date will be selected later in the month, with Saturday the preferred date.

Rebekah and her boyfriend are running Island Adventures (www.goislandadventures.com), and she is halfway to earning her Captain’s license- and has purchased a new boat!

Susanna May is very excited about her birthday on 6/5 and wants ideas on how to celebrate. She also won the 50/50, which totaled $66.

Patrice Messina called the meeting to order at 7:00. There were 21 attendees. The meeting
began with each member introducing herself.

Marcia Kreutzman gave a presentation about her transition to a costume designer after moving
to the Keys. She spoke about the role of color in communicating the relationship between
actors; the role of draping and how it affects movement in dance, creating a sculptural element;
and how changes in costume indicate changes in character development.

Linda Lankenau provided an update on speakers. The May speaker will be from the Museum of
Diving, discussing sponge restoration; in June, a Park Ranger will speak about local parks.
Kathy Sill gave the Treasurer’s report. There is $4,388 in the account.

including one new member and honorary members. Birthdays were announced:
 4/4 Alexa Wheeler
 4/7 Vivian Morrison
 4/22 Susie Timpkin

Sunshine report: a get-well card was sent to Pat Rosendale after her surgery.

Rebekah Susa reported good attendance and a good time at the February Full Moon Party, and
requested sign-ups for the 4/16 Full Moon Party at Island Grill (featuring Brazilian dancers).
WWOW participated in the “Float Your Boat” contest at the Island Fest. They were in 2nd place
following the first heat but were awarded the “Naughty and Not So Nice!” award for making it
their mission to block the winner (but apologies were offered to the winner, who was
permitted to finish first.)

The May activity will be the Annual Luncheon and White Elephant exchange, to be hosted by
Sugie with the date TBD. There will be a trip to Flamingo in June.
